If God Exists then How Do You Know? Part 1

September 5th, 2012

The most common point of contention among atheists and others who express doubts about the existence of God is the argument that God does not exist because He is not visible or physically observable in the world today.

This notion undermines the fact there are many things that exist outside of human sight.  Just think for a moment, what are some things that exist in the world today in which you yourself have never seen before with your very own eyes? Let me help you out with an example, when was the last time you actually saw your heart beating? Unless you have had an echocardiogram (heart ultrasound) or a heart transplant, chances are you never have actually seen your  own heart, let alone your heart beating, even though you know that it exists.

Now think for a moment and ask yourself,  how do you know you have a heart?  In other words, what are the signs of your heart’s existence? Well, for one thing, if you are reading this I am willing to bet that your heart is beating. Other than that, other common signs of your heart’s existence are the facts that you have a pulse, and you can feel your heart beating inside of your chest after performing strenuous activities, which cause your heart to beat faster.

God’s existence is similar to the existence of your heart in that you have never seen your own heart beat but you know it exists due to the signs of your heart’s existence. In the same way in which strenuous activities cause your heart to beat faster and therefore you feel your heart beating in your chest, when an individual is faced with strenuous circumstances in life he or she is more likely to seek and find God in their lives. Just think of all the other things that exist in the world out of human sight, such as gravity, atoms, sub-atomic particles, electricity,  cells, etc. . The aforementioned things, which exist beyond the human field of vision and require special tools(telescopes, microscopes, electron microscopes, etc.)  in order to confirm their existence, are  commonly known to exist and were discovered due to the signs of their existence. Therefore, if God does exist there must be signs that are physically observable and also a special tool in which can be used  to prove the existence of God.  Then this would be beget the questions, what are the signs of God’s existence and through which tool are we able to confirm God’s existence?

The answer is through the Bible, and more specifically Bible prophecy, we are able to observe the signs of God’s existence.  [I know what you are thinking, the Bible? Wasn’t the “Bible” written by men? What makes the Bible so special compared to the Quran or other religious books? Yes, the same “Bible” that was written by men who had devout and unwavering faith in God, and as well had a personal spiritual relationship with God, wrote the books of the Bible through the divine inspiration of God. It is through Bible prophecy in which we not only validate the divine inspiration of the Bible,  but we also validate the existence of God.  Confused? Don’t be, let me explain. In the same way we confirm your heart’s existence via an echocardiogram, the tool geared for studying the heart and its properties, the Bible is the tool used for confirming God’s existence and geared for studying God and His properties. Bible prophecy is the method by which we confirm not only the validity of the Bible as a whole, but also we confirm the existence of God. Therefore, it is Bible Prophecy that sets the Bible apart from other religious texts that also claim divine inspiration.   The prophecies in the Bible accurately and specifically foretell  important events in world history and also the prophecies found in the Bible are still relevant today.

What exactly is Bible prophecy?  By definition prophecy* is defined as 1. Telling what will happen; foretelling future events; 2. Something told about the future; indication of something to come; 3. A divinely inspired, utterance, revelation, writing, etc. ; 4. A book of prophecies. Bible prophecy in effect are passages from the Bible that foretell events thousands of years  after they were written.  The concept of foretelling future events thousands of years before they occur is firmly established in Isaiah Chapter 42:verse 8-9 when God distinguishes Himself from other gods by saying, “I am the Lord, that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to graven images. Behold, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth I tell you of them.”  This concept is reemphasized later on in Isaiah Chapter 46 : verse 8-10 where God states, “Remember this and consider, recall it to mind, you transgressors, remember the former things of old; for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me, declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done.” To accurately foretell the events on earth thousands of years before they occur not only demonstrates God’s existence  but also it is a powerful method by which God can prove His authenticity to mankind. [In later articles, Bible Prophecies will be explained in further detail and also the biblical method of interpreting Bible Prophecies].
